Mark Haddon: A Spot Of Bother

I got this book January 2008 at discounted price and to be honest, I didn't expect much excitement as compared to his previous book. It was in fact rather flat in the beginning. I even rested it for a couple of months before picking it up again. Nevertheless, the plot got 'bloody' amusing as George (the main retired man) got out of control with his life and he attempted to remove a lesion on his hip by himself! At the same time, other characters (Jean, the wife, who was having an affair and was thinking about leaving George; Katie, the daughter, who was getting married to a man whom she was unsure of loving; and Jamie, the son, who was struggling with being an out gay man and getting committed with his lover) learned to look deeper into their chaotic family and started to rebuild closer ties among themselves.

I do agree with Independent on Sunday's comment– "A witty and subtle family drama." The beautiful cover art was created by Marc Boutavant (illustration) & Tim Marrs (illustrated type).

Until we meet again

My late father was born on this day. He had a carefree, adventurous spirit which I find inspiring as I age. I always feel this is what my mum needs sometimes to balance herself up a little. May good health be with her.

Going Bananas

It's sensible being insensible sometimes. I have always wanted to get hold of all these Banana Yoshimoto's novels (cover designed by Pentagram) but I just always felt they were overpriced. Whilst they are disappearing from the shelves with the bygone years, it's probably time to grab them all before it's too late. Lucky me, I found Lizard & Goodbye Tsugumi two weeks ago, Amrita & Kitchen today – all final copies and (still) at full price :-<

I'm lovin' it

Forget the super value meals! Forget the skinny salty fries! One Quarter Pounder with Cheese has enough fat to keep your tummy busy (at least) till tea break ;-) It's still as heavenly juicy as ever. Yum!

Saturday gratified

Suria KLCC – I feel pleased with Kinokuniya's efficient staffs for their help in finding two old Banana Yoshimoto novels today. I am happy that the people in Godiva and Harrods were cheerful and not snobbish. I am glad there is an ongoing art gallery in a shopping mall in Kuala Lumpur. I feel thankful that there is an inviting, simple café called Bon Ton near Isetan supermarket, and not to mention, an elegant, tempting chocolate boutique called Royce at the same row!
